Wolfson College, Inaugural Art Prize
The title borrows from Shakespeare’s Henry VIII: “Why, what is pomp, rule, reign, but earth and dust? And, live we how we can, yet die we must.” Power is not permanent. The Greco-Roman column and Dionysian motifs on the vase reference Pompey, reinforcing the idea that nothing lasts forever. Great men are eventually replaced, and civilisations fall to make way for new ones.
